ANNOUNCEMENT:
Castles
of Gold: Songs and Stories of Irish Emigration
Castles
of Gold invites listeners to spend a captivating hour hearing
songs and stories that explore the joys and sorrows of Irish
emigration.
Two
prominent Irish Americans are the storytellers: Pulitzer
Prize-winning writer Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes
and 'Tis, and Roma Downey, star of the popular TV series
Touched by an Angel. The seven stories they share are written
by award-winning playwright Katerie Morin, whose family
emigrated from County Mayo in the early 1900s. Morin draws
on her family's oral history to re-create the experiences
of leaving Ireland for America.
The
seven songs on the radio show, sung by Pan Morigan, are
mostly traditional. Though they are presented in dynamic,
contemporary arrangements. Among the most thrilling and
interesting in the Irish music repertoire, these songs are
filled with history, longing, and powerful imagery. They
lament the forced exile from Ireland and honor the memory
of beloved places and people left behind.
Morigan's
band boasts world-renowned traditional Irish musicians,
including:
o violinist
Liz Carroll
o piper
Jerry O'Sullivan
o Irish
whistle and flute player Joannie Madden (of Cherish the
Ladies fame)
o citern
and mandolin stylist Larry Campbell (of Bob Dylan's band)
o Celtic
harpist Lois Colin
o button
accordionist John Whelan.
Castles
of Gold also features world-music players like frame-drum
master Glen Velez and jazz, classical, and guitar virtuoso
Ben Butler. The program consists of spoken and sung segments
- seven each - and has a music-to-talk ratio of about 3:2.
